Privacy Policy

Overview

This privacy policy explains which personal data we process when you use the Photone – Grow Light Meter app ("app") or our website growlightmeter.com ("website"), why we do so, and what rights you have. It follows the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and, where applicable, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The key points:

  • The app works without an account. Camera images never leave your device.
  • For statistics and error analysis, we collect usage and device data. This data is linked to a random device ID, not to your name.
  • We don't sell your data.

App

Usage and Device Data

To improve the app and fix bugs, we use analytics and crash reporting services to record how the app is used. We process:

  • Device model, operating system, app version, language, and country
  • App usage, e.g., features used, settings, and subscription status
  • Crash and error reports

This data is linked to a random device ID. We don't collect camera images, your precise location, your name, or any activity outside the app.

For certain actions, e.g., when you send us a support email from the app or calibrate the app, we also store the app's technical settings and details about your subscription. This lets us help you with problems more effectively.

The legal basis under the GDPR is our legitimate interest in a stable and continuously improved app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Purchases

You buy Photone Pro through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google handle the payment; we don't receive any payment or personal data (not even your email address), only information about the purchase, e.g., product, subscription period, and store country. The legal basis is the performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).

Website

Hosting

When you visit the website, our server processes technically necessary data such as your IP address, date and time, the page requested, and your browser. We need this data to deliver the website and protect it against attacks.

Cookies and Web Analytics

The website uses necessary cookies and your browser's local storage, e.g., to remember your cookie choice or to keep you signed in.

Only if you consent in the cookie banner do we also use Google Analytics to see how visitors use the website. Google Analytics doesn't store IP addresses. You can use the entire website without consenting. You can withdraw your consent at any time by clearing the website data in your browser; the cookie banner will then appear again.

In the app's guides, we use Google Analytics to see which guides are helpful.

The legal basis under the GDPR is our legitimate interest in a functioning website for necessary cookies, your consent for Google Analytics on the website (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), and our legitimate interest for the guides in the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

YouTube and Google Translate

Embedded YouTube videos are loaded directly from YouTube, which may set cookies. If an article isn't written in your language, we also load Google Translate so you can have the article translated.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address. You confirm your subscription via a link in an email. To improve the newsletter, we see whether it's opened and which links are clicked. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).

Contacting Us by Email

If you write to us, e.g., for support or to join our affiliate program, we process your information to handle your request or to pay out commissions. The legal basis is handling your request or the performance of a contract (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).

Service Providers and Transfers Abroad

We use service providers that process data on our behalf:

  • Analytics and crash reports: USA and EU
  • Website hosting and newsletter delivery: USA
  • Email: EU
  • Embedded videos and translations (Google): USA

Apple and Google process data on downloads and purchases in the app stores as independent controllers.

Under Swiss law, EU countries are considered to provide adequate data protection, as is the USA for companies certified under the Swiss-U.S. or EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Otherwise, we rely on the European Commission's standard contractual clauses, which are also recognized by the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).

Retention

We store personal data only as long as we need it for the respective purpose or are legally required to keep it, e.g., business records for ten years. Google Analytics deletes user-level data after two months, and crash reports are deleted after 90 days. We delete your newsletter email address when you unsubscribe.

Your Rights

You can request access to your data and have it corrected, deleted, or handed over to you. You can object to the processing and withdraw your consent at any time with effect for the future. To do so, contact legal[ät]growlightmeter.com.

Since we don't know your name in the app, we need your device ID for requests about app data. It's included automatically when you write to us via the support function in the app.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the FDPIC or, if you live in the EU, with the data protection authority in your country.

Children

Our services are not directed at children under 16.

Changes

We update this privacy policy when our data processing or the legal situation changes. The version published on this page applies.
